The Greater Kansas City Japan Festival showcases both the traditional culture and pop culture, as well as the food, music and art of Japan.

2025 Theme: Masks & Myths

This year’s KC Japan Festival theme, Masks & Myths, explores the power of masks in Japanese culture—from the dramatic symbols of Noh and Kabuki theater to mystical figures such as kitsune, oni, and tengu. Discover how masks once warded off demons or summoned good fortune, how honne and tatemae reflect the duality of self, and how modern cosplay and animegao blend tradition with pop culture. Join us to experience how masks continue to enchant, transform, and connect ancient rituals with today’s creative expression.
