Make Your Own Koinobori! Kids Craft Workshop
Get creative and bring home a colorful piece of Japan Fest! In this hands-on kids workshop, children will create and decorate their own Koinobori, inspired by the colorful carp streamers traditionally flown in Japan.
Along the way, kids will discover the meaning behind koinobori and how the carp came to symbolize strength, perseverance, and good fortune in Japanese culture. At the end of the workshop, each child will have their own bright, one-of-a-kind koinobori to take home and display!
WORKSHOP DETAILS:
- 45-minute hands-on workshop
- Japanese craft for kids: Best for ages 5–13
- Limited to just 15 children per session
- One craft kit included with each child’s ticket
- Each child must be accompanied by one adult (18+). Accompanying adults assist their child and do not need a workshop ticket.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP LEADER:
Rachel Taylor was born in the Midwest and has called the Kansas City area home since the early 2000s. She currently lives in Johnson County with her two children.
Taylor is a Johnson County Community College (JCCC) alumna, where she earned an A.A.S. in Entrepreneurship. She continued her education at Arizona State University, where her focus shifted to the fine arts. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with honors in Digital Photography. Her conceptual photography has been featured in galleries, magazines, and on Arizona State University’s Digital Photography website. After graduating from ASU, Taylor joined the AmeriCorps program Teach for America, where she developed a passion for its mission of expanding educational opportunities for students in historically underserved communities. During her first two years in the classroom, Taylor continued her own education while teaching, earning a Master of Education (M.Ed.) from the University of Missouri–St. Louis.
Today, Rachel Taylor is a 9th-grade English instructor at Frontier Schools in Kansas City, Missouri, where she brings her background in the arts, creativity, and passion for education into the classroom.
