SUMMARY:Anime Screening: Kabukibu! Complete Collection
DESCRIPTION:With its elaborate makeup\, gorgeous costumes and stylized pantomime\, there are few forms of entertainment that are as iconically Japanese as the ancient mix of dance and drama known as Kabuki. And yet\, modern Japanese students tend to have little interest in it\, which frustrates Kurogo Kurusu. Kurogo has loved Kabuki ever since he was a kid\, and the fact that his high school has a drama club but no kabuki club drives him crazy. So\, naturally\, he’s decided that the solution is to make his own club. Even if it means drafting other students\, getting a faculty sponsor who knows nothing about the art\, and “bending” some of the stricter rules about things like allowing girls to participate in the classwide culture shock that will become KABUKIBU!

SUMMARY:Purification\, Meditation\, and the Realm of Spirit in Japanese Art and Contemporary Calligraphy
DESCRIPTION:Koji and Susan Nakao \nDid you know that Japanese art\, like Japanese culture\, is strongly influenced by the “Realm of Spirit?” Are you aware that both the subject matter and creative methodologies used in Japanese art frequently have a strong connection to Shinto and Buddhist practices\, especially those connected with purification and meditation? Please join us as we explore some of the connections between Japanese art\, contemporary Japanese calligraphy\, and the Realm of Spirit. \nSusan\, a former art education professor\, took students enrolled in one of her summer art offerings at Emporia State University to Japan in the summer of 2009. She and her husband\, Koji\, assisted in the translation of a biography\, “The Shōsho of Teshima Yūkei\,” (2009)\, authored by his son\, Tairiku Teshima and published in English by L.H. Yōkō Shuppan\, 2014. Susan also assisted in the translation of a children’s book\, “The Tower of Light\,” by Takuzo Yoshimura\, with illustrations by Kota Sato\, published in English by L.H. USA in 2012. Koji served as a “priest/Doshi” in a Japanese spiritual practice of purification for more than 40 years until his retirement in 2021. The couple now own and care for a small Yōkō farm in Franklin County\, KS\, near Ottawa.

SUMMARY:Grand Kabuki Spectacle
DESCRIPTION:Kabuki is the classical and popular larger-than-life Japanese music theater tradition dating back to the early 1600s and going through many evolutions as popular theater and dance to flourish now\, some 400 years later. Kabuki (whose name comes from the verb\, “kabuku”\, meaning tilt or lean\, like a rakish tilt to your hat)\, started as ladies dancing on the river flats in old Kyoto. From there it evolved into a male-based dance/drama form\, and then reached a heyday in the mid-1800s\, in Saruwaka Town Kabuki in Edo (modern-day Tokyo). \nOur 2023 festival has invited guest Kabuki dancers Kikuhiro Otowa and Ritsuyo Wazaogi\, both from Tokyo\, to produce and present a Kabuki dance extravaganza\, replete with live music\, drama\, dance and stage effects\, audience participation and much more. \nOur festival kabuki presentations will be forty-five minute shows that will take you back in time and space to the environs of old Edo and its Saruwaka Town Kabuki theater world. Dances will be performed in three iconic forms\, the celebrational Sanbaso (Harvest Prayers and Celebrations)\, the female role Dōjōji (Maiden of Dōjōji Temple)\, and the male role Sukeroku (The Edo Dandy)\, all connected by a dramatic script that ties them together and welcomes the audience in. \nAn additional part of the program features Japanese dancer Kikuasuka Wakayagi performing the classic Japanese dance piece\, Kyōganoko Dōjōji (Maiden of Dōjōji Temple). \n  \n\nOpening: Travel through time and space to 19th century Saruwaka Town in Edo (modern-day Tokyo)\, when Kabuki was at its heyday\, after over 200 years of evolution and development.\nDance: Shitadashi Sanbaso (Tongue-out Sanbaso) by Kikuhiro OTOWA. A Kabuki dance celebrating the autumn harvest\, longevity\, and vitality.\nStage Action: Kurogo\, the invisible stagehands.\nMusic and Kabuki\nDance: Kyôganoko Dôjôji (The Maiden of Dôjôji) by Ritsuyo WAZAOGI. A Kabuki dance in the Onnagata(female role) style.\nInside Kabuki: percussion\, poses and audience participation.\nDance: Sukeroku (The Edo Dandy\, Sukeroku) by Kikuhiro OTOWA. A Kabuki dance in the Aragoto (male role) style.
