Kintsugi 金継ぎ\, meaning ‘golden repair’\, is the ancient Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with powdered gold or other metal.\n\n90 minute workshop. Each participant will be given a tea bowl to repair. Kurt will guide the participants through the process of Kintsugi repair and they will take their repaired bowl home as a valued keepsake. \nEach workshop is limited to 25 participants and is best suited for ages 13 and older.\n\nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR\nKurt Caddy is an artist who believes that art is generative and transformative. He believes that one of the roles of an artist is to help (or force) the viewer to ‘see the unseen’. For him\, art springs from a deeper place within his mind and heart and overflows in abstract paintings and sculptures. \nKurt is also a kintsugi artist. Kintsugi is the 15th Century art of mending tea bowls with gold. He believes that art can help portray the idea of a redeemed beauty and transformation is indeed possible. He calls this the “art of transformation”. \nKurt had the very fortunate opportunity to study with Makoto Fujimura\, a contemporary nihonga artist and author. Makoto Fujimura developed a technique for kintsugi that is quicker and simpler than the traditional method\, yet shares the same philosophy\, beauty\, and symbolism of repairing what is broken and the metaphor for embracing your flaws and imperfections. Kurt learned this procedure from Makoto and will be offering this unique workshop at the Greater Kansas City Japan Festival on October 5\, 2024. \nIn addition to Makoto Fujimura\, Kurt has been influenced by artists such as Grace Boden\, Mark Rothko\, and Kandinsky. His is also heavily influenced by Japanese and native American cultures. He has exhibited work in Arkansas\, Pennsylvania\, Missouri\, and New York.

DESCRIPTION:MTC: Polsky Theatre • 11:15 AM\nTea Ceremony Demonstration – Edo-senke\nDemonstrated by Yuri\, Asuka and Hitoshi Iijima\nAttendees will have the opportunity to witness\, and several attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony.\nYuri\, Hitoshi\, and Asuka Iijima are Tea masters from Maebashi\, Japan\, who are trained in the Edo-senke school of Tea Ceremony. Yuri has studied tea ceremony for 40 years and is a licensed tea master holding a Shinnodaisu certification.  In addition to her tea training\, Yuri holds licenses for Ikebana (flower arranging) in the Sougetsu school and is also a Kimono specialist. She is a retired Junior High art teacher and owns and operates a school for Japanese cultural arts called Nagomi-ryu Bunkadou\, located in Isesaki\, Japan (Springfield\, Missouri’s sister city). She provides instruction in Tea\, Flower arranging\, wearing Kimono\, watercolor\, and other arts. \nAsuka has studied tea ceremony for 25 years and holds a master certification. Hitoshi has studied tea for more than 10 years.   \nA few members of the audience will be invited to join Yuri\,  Asuka\, and Hitoshi on stage to experience and learn first-hand the elements and steps of the Japanese tea ceremony. All attendees will gain interesting insights that will help to demystify this cultural practice. Tea gatherings are simply honored moments to spend with friends\, to pause\, and be mindful of how we experience our space through our senses. \nAsuka Iijima and  Dianne Daugherty\, retired JCCC Adjunct Professor of Japanese and GKCJF Director of Performing Arts will assist in providing explanations in English. \nLearn about Tea Ceremony

They are only there to assist child and do not require a ticket. \n1 set of craft supplies per ticket.\nThis workshop is best suited for ages 5-13 years old. \n\nABOUT THE WORKSHOP LEADER: \nRachel Taylor was born in the Midwest and has called the Kansas City area home since the early 2000s. She currently lives in Johnson County with her two children. \nTaylor is a Johnson County Community College (JCCC) alumna\, where she earned an A.A.S. in Entrepreneurship. She continued her education at Arizona State University\, where her focus shifted to the fine arts. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with honors in Digital Photography. Her conceptual photography has been featured in galleries\, magazines\, and on Arizona State University’s Digital Photography website. After graduating from ASU\, Taylor joined the AmeriCorps program Teach for America\, where she developed a passion for its mission of expanding educational opportunities for students in historically underserved communities. During her first two years in the classroom\, Taylor continued her own education while teaching\, earning a Master of Education (M.Ed.) from the University of Missouri–St. Louis. \nToday\, Rachel Taylor is a 9th-grade English instructor at Frontier Schools in Kansas City\, Missouri\, where she brings her background in the arts\, creativity\, and passion for education into the classroom. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:MTC: Yardley Hall • 1:00 PM\, 4:15 PM\nMadoka Koguchi 小口窓花\nMadoka is an actor\, singer\, dancer and co-founder of Natsu Matsuri KC from Tokyo\, Japan.\nAfter graduating from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy New York in 2017\, she joined the Broadway national tour of Miss Saigon. When the pandemic shut down the Broadway industry\, she relocated to Kansas City in 2020 to help found the community-based Vietnamese coffee shop\, Cafe Cà Phê. While working and building the community through Cafe Cà Phê\, she was also seen in Legally Blonde (KC Starlight) and A Chorus Line (MTH). She will be featured in the musical Little Women at MTH early next year. \nMadoka is also a Japanese community event organizer in greater Kansas City\, and she co-hosted KC’s first Japanese summer festival Natsu Matsuri KC with Chikara Hibino as well as Shinnen-kai and Ohanami. \nShe is committed to bringing Japanese/Asian representation to KC and beyond\, and is passionate about connecting and providing safe space for the AANHPI community. \nFollow @madoka_koguchi on Instagram.\nPhoto Credit: Photo by Travis Young. DESCRIPTION:THIS IS A TICKETED ADD-ON WORKSHOP: $20\nMTC 215 • 2nd Floor • 2:00 PM\nPurchase your ticketed workshops here. \nPoems and Prints: Waka Poetry and Mokuhanga Woodblock Print Workshop\nThis workshop introduces the basics of Japanese poetry (waka) and woodblock printing (mokuhanga).\nEach participant will print their own woodblock image and compose a poem inspired by it. In Japan\, words and images have never been far apart. Waka\, the thirty-one-syllable form that has carried expressions of love\, longing\, and seasonal wonder for over a millennium\, was rarely just text: poems were brushed onto paintings\, inscribed on fans\, and woven into the very images they responded to. This workshop invites you into that tradition by pairing waka composition with mokuhanga\, the art of Japanese woodblock printing perfected in the Edo period (1603–1868)\, whose water-based pigments and hand-rubbing technique give prints their distinctive luminous color. Participants will choose from a range of pre-carved designs – traditional Japanese motifs as well as contemporary imagery – and print their own by hand. Waka has always begun with an image that stirs a feeling\, and your print becomes that starting point: whatever thoughts and emotions surface in the making\, you’ll give them form in thirty-one syllables of your own. No experience with poetry\, printmaking\, or Japanese is needed. \nSupplies are provided. This workshop is best suited for ages 16 and older. \n\nABOUT THE WORKSHOP LEADERS: \nOriginally from California\, M. Willie Garcia is a printmaker who currently resides and works in Kansas City\, MO\, and Lawrence\, KS. They earned their B.F.A. in Printmaking from the Kansas City Art Institute\, followed by an M.F.A. from the University of Kansas. Garcia’s artwork has garnered regional acclaim\, with notable exhibitions including their participation in “Queer Abstraction” group exhibition at the Nerman Contemporary Museum of Art\, the “Star Children” exhibition at the Bradbury Art Museum\, and a featured at the Des Moines Arts Center as part of the “Immersive” exhibition. Was the 2024/2025 Grant Wood Fellow at the University of Iowa. \nLinda Galvane is an Assistant Professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Kansas. She holds a Ph.D. in Japanese Literature from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Osaka University. She also practices mokuhanga\, Japanese woodblock printmaking\, often in dialogue with literary works\, and explores connections among Japan\, the Soviet Union\, and Latvia within transnational Japanese studies. \n  \n

In 2009\, she met with guitarist\, Jo Yamanaka and they started to produce and sing their original songs. Their first collaborative single\, Mahalo-Arigato\, was originally created for the Kansas City Japan Festival and was very well received in the U.S. Mr. Jo Yamanaka will accompany Aya on guitar.

Yosakoi started in the city of Kochi in 1954\, as a modern rendition of Awa Odori\, a traditional summer dance. As of 2005\, Yosakoi-style dancing has spread throughout much of Japan. The style of dance is highly energetic\, combining traditional Japanese dance movements with modern music. \n  \n\n  \nAbout Tatsumaki Yosakoi Dance Club\nIn June of 2006\, the Tatsumaki Yosakoi\, Japanese Yosakoi Dance Club\, from Kansas State University traveled to Hokkaido\, Japan\, in June of 2006 to participate in the large Yosakoi festival there. With more than 43\,000 dancers and 370-plus teams\, the K-State Yosakoi Dance Group was awarded a special “Performance Award”.

Each child will decorate their own vibrant wind sock to take home. \nEach workshop is limited to 15 participants.\nChild must be accompanied by an adult 18+. One adult per child. They are only there to assist child and do not require a ticket. \n1 set of craft supplies per ticket.\nThis workshop is best suited for ages 5-13 years old. \n\nABOUT THE WORKSHOP LEADER: \nRachel Taylor was born in the Midwest and has called the Kansas City area home since the early 2000s. She currently lives in Johnson County with her two children. \nTaylor is a Johnson County Community College (JCCC) alumna\, where she earned an A.A.S. in Entrepreneurship. She continued her education at Arizona State University\, where her focus shifted to the fine arts. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with honors in Digital Photography. Her conceptual photography has been featured in galleries\, magazines\, and on Arizona State University’s Digital Photography website. After graduating from ASU\, Taylor joined the AmeriCorps program Teach for America\, where she developed a passion for its mission of expanding educational opportunities for students in historically underserved communities. During her first two years in the classroom\, Taylor continued her own education while teaching\, earning a Master of Education (M.Ed.) from the University of Missouri–St. Louis. \nToday\, Rachel Taylor is a 9th-grade English instructor at Frontier Schools in Kansas City\, Missouri\, where she brings her background in the arts\, creativity\, and passion for education into the classroom. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:THIS IS A TICKETED ADD-ON WORKSHOP: $80\nMTC 212 • 2nd Floor • 10:00 AM\, 1:00 PM\, 4:00 PM\nPurchase your ticketed workshops here. \nKintsugi Workshops\nInstructed by Kurt Caddy\nJoin artist Kurt Caddy for a hands-on workshop\, learning the “art of transformation”. Kintsugi 金継ぎ\, meaning ‘golden repair’\, is the ancient Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with powdered gold or other metal.\n\n90 minute workshop. Each participant will be given a tea bowl to repair. Kurt will guide the participants through the process of Kintsugi repair and they will take their repaired bowl home as a valued keepsake. \nEach workshop is limited to 25 participants and is best suited for ages 13 and older.\n\nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR\nKurt Caddy is an artist who believes that art is generative and transformative. He believes that one of the roles of an artist is to help (or force) the viewer to ‘see the unseen’. For him\, art springs from a deeper place within his mind and heart and overflows in abstract paintings and sculptures. \nKurt is also a kintsugi artist. Kintsugi is the 15th Century art of mending tea bowls with gold. He believes that art can help portray the idea of a redeemed beauty and transformation is indeed possible. He calls this the “art of transformation”. \nKurt had the very fortunate opportunity to study with Makoto Fujimura\, a contemporary nihonga artist and author. Makoto Fujimura developed a technique for kintsugi that is quicker and simpler than the traditional method\, yet shares the same philosophy\, beauty\, and symbolism of repairing what is broken and the metaphor for embracing your flaws and imperfections. Kurt learned this procedure from Makoto and will be offering this unique workshop at the Greater Kansas City Japan Festival on October 5\, 2024. \nIn addition to Makoto Fujimura\, Kurt has been influenced by artists such as Grace Boden\, Mark Rothko\, and Kandinsky. His is also heavily influenced by Japanese and native American cultures. He has exhibited work in Arkansas\, Pennsylvania\, Missouri\, and New York.

DESCRIPTION:MTC: Yardley Hall • 1:00 PM\, 4:15 PM\nMadoka Koguchi 小口窓花\nMadoka is an actor\, singer\, dancer and co-founder of Natsu Matsuri KC from Tokyo\, Japan.\nAfter graduating from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy New York in 2017\, she joined the Broadway national tour of Miss Saigon. When the pandemic shut down the Broadway industry\, she relocated to Kansas City in 2020 to help found the community-based Vietnamese coffee shop\, Cafe Cà Phê. While working and building the community through Cafe Cà Phê\, she was also seen in Legally Blonde (KC Starlight) and A Chorus Line (MTH). She will be featured in the musical Little Women at MTH early next year. \nMadoka is also a Japanese community event organizer in greater Kansas City\, and she co-hosted KC’s first Japanese summer festival Natsu Matsuri KC with Chikara Hibino as well as Shinnen-kai and Ohanami. \nShe is committed to bringing Japanese/Asian representation to KC and beyond\, and is passionate about connecting and providing safe space for the AANHPI community. \nFollow @madoka_koguchi on Instagram.\nPhoto Credit: Photo by Travis Young. DESCRIPTION:THIS IS A TICKETED ADD-ON WORKSHOP: $20\nMTC 234 • 2nd Floor • 11:00 AM\, 1:30 PM\, 5:00 PM\nPurchase your ticketed workshops here. \nJapanese Calligraphy Workshop\nAlso known as shodou (the way of the brush)\, this art form is a revered centuries-old tradition and Zen practice which evokes harmony\, beauty\, and balance.\nParticipants will learn how to prepare their mind for shodou and how to engage the brush and ink with the paper while practicing standard brush strokes used in writing kanji characters. Each participant will complete their own calligraphy omiyage* piece to display in their home. All supplies are provided. \nEach workshop is limited to 25 participants and is best suited for ages 13 and older. \n*omiyage means souvenir or gift

SUMMARY:Yosakoi Dance Club Performance
DESCRIPTION:MTC: Yardley Hall • 5:30 PM\nYosakoi Dance Club Performance\nwith Tatsumaki Yosakoi Dance Club\nYosakoi is a unique style of dance that originated in Japan. The style of dance is highly energetic\, combining traditional Japanese dance movements with modern music.\nYosakoi started in the city of Kochi in 1954\, as a modern rendition of Awa Odori\, a traditional summer dance. As of 2005\, Yosakoi-style dancing had spread throughout much of Japan. \nIn June of 2006\, the Tatsumaki Yosakoi\, Japanese Yosakoi Dance Club\, from Kansas State University traveled to Hokkaido\, Japan\, in June of 2006 to participate in the large Yosakoi festival there. With more than 43\,000 dancers and 370-plus teams\, the K-State Yosakoi Dance Group was awarded a special “Performance Award”.
