GEB 233: Craig Auditorium

Japan’s Women Warriors – The Onna-Bushi

Presenter: Brittany Hennessey

The onna-bushi represent the women of Japan’s warrior tradition. From stories predating the samurai class, through the centuries of samurai history, and into the present day, accounts of female warriors have continued to shape and preserve this legacy.

In this presentation, we will explore the history, culture, weapons, and tactics associated with the onna-bushi, examining how women participated in Japan’s warrior traditions across different eras. Students at the Tosa no Shugyo Dojo, guided by Tora Lawson, continue to train and carry forward aspects of this tradition today.  Join us to explore the history of the onna-bushi and discover how these women lived, trained, and fought throughout the ages. Brittany will be joined by Ele McManamey and Hoai-Viet Pham.
